2011 Flayed Angel

Flayed Angel

(General Anatomy of the Human body in position, size and natural color)

Photography

2007-2009, Tehran

“…Jacques Fabien Gautier D’Agoty
(1717-1785), crossed the taboo and showed the forbidden inside of the body. He did without opening up a cadaver. He used his imagination. The expression he gives to the woman is not a live expression. She is like a generic painting-Woman With A Nude Back.  But here she is not nude, she is flayed. In this image we can see the tenderness of the woman, and the repulsiveness of her back.

With the wings bought in a fancy dress store “she” became an Angel.

In the series, “Flayed Angel” the photographer shows all strata of the soft skin. The cruelty, fear, insecurity… Eyes could see none of them, everything happens off camera.

…What is cruel in this photo is the fear-the feeling of being scared. And the danger is not physical in the moment, it is lurking round the corner, it is waiting in ambush.

From the artist statement

… Like the chipped paint on the studio wall, Razavipour peels her skin of by exposing it. Thus the gaze of the beholder hovers between echoes of an artistic tradition and an intimate self-portrait. Here the artist uses the materiality of the bare skin as a canvas for the projection of the self. The realistic setting further deprives the onlooker of any sustained idealisation of the female nude. Some of her photo's seem to recall Ingres' famous 'La Baigneuse de Valpinson', and Man Ray's no less renowned reinterpretation 'Le Violon d'Ingres', Hans Bellmer's photo's 'Unica', or even Rebecca Horn's works of the '70, but the artist transcends these quotations with ease.
